Discovering Houen Heng Peak — Kashmir’s Hidden Summit of Tragedy and Majesty
Situated high in the Pir Panjal range of South Kashmir, Houen Heng Peak (also spelled Huen Heng), locally known as the “Dog’s Horn”, stands at an elevation of about 4200 metres above sea level. It is part of District Kulgam, and is renowned not only for its dramatic landscapes but also for a tragic plane crash that turned the mountain into one of Kashmir’s most haunting landmarks.
Location & Access
Houen Heng lies in the rugged terrain between Mohu Valley and Gulab Garh, forming a sharply rising peak of the Pir Panjal range. Trekking routes approach it from several directions — Kutmarg (Badijahlan) via the DK Marg–Chimmer route, Nuss Pather, Panchan Pather, and the somewhat gentler Dudkuchan / Sanyadi route. Because its slopes are steep, the easier access comes from the backside (Sanyadi / Dudkuchan) than from the front face.
The History That Haunts
On 7 February 1966, a Fokker F-27 aircraft veered off its course in poor visibility and crashed into this peak. The crash claimed all 37 people on board, including crew and various Jammu & Kashmir government officers. The debris remains in the snow-covered slopes to this day and forms part of local folklore. Because of that event, Houen Heng is more than a mountain — it is a symbol of nature’s beauty, human tragedy, and remembrance.
Trekking Routes & Stage-Wise Breakdown
There are a few known approaches to Houen Heng. The routes differ in difficulty and exposure, so trekkers should choose based on skill, time, and weather.
1. Dudkuchan / Sanyadi Route (Relaxed Approach)
This is considered one of the easier routes. From DK Marg, one branches off toward
Sanyadi or Dudkuchan and follows the glacial outflows. The path passes alpine meadows like Rampai, Pajmal, Kalkim, Burzi Pathri, Chopan Pathri before reaching a pass called Gagad Gali, beyond which the final ascent to Houen Heng begins. This route, though easier, still demands solid fitness and mountain gear.
2. Front-Face Steep Routes (Kutmarg / Chimmer / Gulab Garh side)
These routes are direct yet perilous. The slope from the valley side is extremely st
eep, and only seasoned mountaineers often attempt ascent from this face.Approaches such as Kutmarg (via DK Marg → Chimmer), Nuss Pather, and Panchan Pather connect to ridges offering access.
-
Panchan Pather is a lower meadow (~2400 m) that serves as a staging area.
-
Nuss Pather (~2600 m) lies just above Panchan and offers a view of Houen Heng’s imposing face.
-
From Nuss Pather or the ridge line, the track ascends steeply toward the mountain’s crags.
